Conference on Optimising Diabetes Care for People with Severe Mental Illness

Conference on Optimising Diabetes Care for People with Severe Mental Illness -
22.03.22

DDA-visiting professor Richard I.G. Holt and his colleagues at Steno Diabetes Center Sjælland have arranged a conference aiming to shed light on how to reduce the health inequalities experiences by people with both severe mental illness and diabetes.

This one-day conference aims to bring together health care professionals (doctors, nurses, allied health care professionals) working with people with diabetes and severe mental illness in psychiatric, general medical, and primary care settings.

Facts that demand action
The prevalence of type 2 diabetes is approximately doubled among people with severe mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder.

People with both type 2 diabetes and severe mental illness are more likely to develop acute complications associated with diabetes, more likely to develop chronic microvascular and macrovascular complications, and die prematurely as a result of diabetes.

Arranged by DDA visiting professor
The conference is partly arranged by Professor Richard I.G. Holt from the University of Southampton, UK – a DDA visiting professor at Steno Diabetes Center Sjælland in Psychiatry West in Slagelse. The purpose of his visiting professorship is to boost research and treatment efforts for patients with diabetes and mental illness.

The conference is hosted by the Steno Diabetes Center Sjælland and Psychiatry West in Slagelse, and will bring together national and international speakers to address the issues.

Venue: Vilcon Hotel & Konferencegaard, Lorupvej 44, 4200 Slagelse

Date and time: 24 May 2022, 10:00 -17:00 followed by dinner
