Symposium on Diabetes - Do It Yourself Movement

Under the banner #WeAreNotWaiting, people with diabetes have taken the initiative in driving technological innovation. Developing platforms and apps, and reverse-engineering existing products - including the development of an artificial pancreas – they have generated Do-it-Yourself (DIY) solutions to the everyday challenges of diabetes management. Such user driven innovations present new opportunities and challenges for people with diabetes, healthcare professionals, researchers, developers and policy makers. This symposium will provide a 360⁰ perspective on opportunities and challenges drawing directly on the experiences and insights of leading figures within the DIY diabetes movement. At the same time this symposium will identify and elucidate the ethical, legal and moral dilemmas which DIY diabetes solutions pose to all those who are concerned with diabetes care - now and in the future.
