Diabetes epidemiology

The world is experiencing a rapid transition in health. While global life expectancy has increased markedly in the past century, so have the levels of sedentarism and obesity. These developments are leading to an unprecedented increase in the numbers of people with type 2 diabetes, across developed countries as well as the developing world.

Course organisers
The course is arranged by the Danish Diabetes Academy in collaboration with Professor Daniel Witte, Department of Public Health, Aarhus University and Professor Matthias Schulze, German Center for Diabetes Research (DZD).
Who can participate
The course is primarily aimed at PhD students working in diabetes epidemiology, or interested in learning about the major current topics in diabetes epidemiology. Basic epidemiological concept will only be reviewed briefly and knowledge of basic epidemiological concepts is required.
Aim - learning objective
At the end of the course the students will have learned:
- To gain insight into the way epidemiological research contributes to our understanding of diabetes and our ability to prevent and treat it
- To understand the epidemiological approach and way of thinking, as applied to diabetes
- To get an overview of the main landmarks in epidemiological research that have shaped the present state of research and clinical practice
- To gain experience with practical epidemiological methods for the assessment of the main risk factors for diabetes
- To get an overview of the major outstanding themes in diabetes research and how epidemiology may contribute to resolving them
Learning threads:
- Central concepts in epidemiology, applied to diabetes research
- History, definitions and concepts
- Risk factors for diabetes
- Diabetes pathophysiology at the population level
- Diabetes complications
- Major issues in diabetes epidemiology
- Practical thread
Content
Central concepts in Epidemiology:
- Review of incidence rates, mortality, prevalence, absolute and relative risks, different approximations of relative risk
- Review of main epidemiological study designs
The course will follow four complementary tracks:
Background: Review of the landmark epidemiological studies and clinical trials that have shaped the current state-of-the-art in diabetes diagnosis, treatment and prevention
Theory: Review of classical and novel epidemiological methods, as applied to the study of diabetes, its determinants and complications
Implementation: How do epidemiologists study the main risk factors for type 2 diabetes and the main diabetic complications? An overview of the different methods used to measure risk factors, disease states and outcomes validly in an epidemiological setting
Practice: Preparing, executing, analysing and reporting on a mini epidemiological study during the four days of the course
