A 2-day workshop for young diabetes researchers who want to develop their essential skills on how to present their research projects and findings to the public, including how to communicate research to people living with diabetes via videos.

After the course, all participants are obliged to record one short video to be published at the Danish Diabetes Association’s Facebook.

WHO CAN ATTEND?

The workshop is for PhD Students and Postdocs. Half of the seats are reserved Danish speaking researchers and clinicians.

Due to the limited number of seats, you are not guaranteed a seat until you receive an e-mail with final confirmation. 

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

This workshop will cover:

  • Story techniques that enable you to craft clear, concise and compelling narratives adapted to target audiences.
  • Basic elements of design to produce effective and informative slides that visually complement your verbal story-telling.
  • Effective techniques for clear, confident and engaging delivery of your presentation.
  • Opportunity to practice your presentation techniques in front of a live audience and receive feedback from the course-leader and fellow course participants.

Before the workshop, participants will have to prepare a popular summary of the key information they wish to convey in their presentation. For further details, see ‘additional information’ below.

Throughout the workshop, participants will get a chance to:

  • Draft their presentation,
  • reflect and work to improve on this draft presentation using the principles we teach in the workshop,
  • get feedback from peers and the instructors, and
  • practice giving this presentation in front of a live audience

All participants must bring a laptop to the workshop.

Dinner registration
There will be a networking dinner on 19 October. Please state if you will participate in the dinner when you register.

Accommodation
For participants living outside Copenhagen, it is possible to get accommodation. When you register, please state if you would like accommodation.

Preparation of summary
Please prepare a popular summary of the key information you wish to convey in your presentation. This summary will be used as a start-off to plan and draft your presentation.

How to prepare:

  • Max 1 page of text
  • Consider the following questions when preparing your summary:
  • Background/context: What is the topic? How is it situated in a big-picture context? Why is this important?
  • Question/Problem: What is the question/problem you are interested in? Why?
  • Purpose/goal: What is the purpose or goal of your research?
  • Approach: What did you do (or plan to do, if work not done yet) to reach that goal?
  • Results: What are the results (or expected outcomes, if the work is not done yet)?
  • Impact: What are the implications of the research?
  • So what: Why should the audience care about your research?

Video to be recorded after the workshop 
All participants are obliged to record one short video to be published at the Danish Diabetes Association’s Facebook. The recording of the video is not part of the workshop.

No-show fee
Please note that it is free of charge to participate in the course however the DDA will charge a no-show fee of 500 DKK if you do not show up and have not unregistered from the course prior to its start.
