DETAILED DESCRIPTION

The world of the 21st century is rapidly changing and changing faster than ever: we can’t imagine what the world will be like for today’s e.g. 25-year-old researcher, retiring at approximately 70 in 2065. Simply reflect on the changes that have occurred in the same timescale of the last 35 years, and their impact on diabetes research.

Researchers have to be prepared not only for their career of today but also for that in 5, 10, 20+ years. While we can predict some of the skills that will be required, we cannot imagine what new skills, new developments or new technology may arrive. We can however consider, create and develop the mindsets which will help us think forward; respond and adapt to change; to be - and continue to be - a successful researcher in this rapidly changing world.

The core of the RLDP is its long-term focus on cultivating three key mindsets important for future leaders—Resourcefulness, Connection and Sustainability. During the RLDP you will learn specific skillsets and cultivate these key mindsets in three six-month modules.

Resourcefulness is the ability to process information subjectively as well as objectively. It is not just a cognitive skill, but a mindset which enables you not only to make the best use of what you have but also to see possibilities where no one else does and to anticipate the challenges that may be required of you.

Connection is about building relationships with others, connecting the research with the field and its stakeholders and connecting to our own motivation, ethics, integrity etc.

Sustainability means several things in the context of this programme. It considers the sustainability of one’s career in terms of relevance, skills, leadership and funding as well as the need and thus ability to respond to change. Furthermore, this programme recognises the importance of locating one’s career within the wider life context and as such will consider the sustainability of one’s self both within a career (e.g. burnout, motivation) and within life (work-life balance).

The RLDP is an 18-month programme of three 6-month modules. Each module contains:

  • A two-day workshop to develop skills.
  • Podcasts to inspire and deepen the understanding.
  • Webinars check-ins to support your learning.
  • Practical, relevant projects to further your career.

In addition to each module, three stand-alone one-day workshops on Academic Writing, Publishing and Teaching will be included in the programme.

This information meeting is designed to give you an overall introduction to the RLDP. And to answer any questions you might have, so you are fully prepared to send in your application.

The RLDP opens for applications 3 February 2020, where we will also upload additional information. You will find the information and the application form here from 3 February 2020.
