The Autumn School on the Role of Microbiome in Complex Metabolic & Inflammatory Diseases is jointly organised by the Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel (CAU), the Cluster of Excellence “Precision Medicine in Chronic Inflammation” (PMI), University of Copenhagen (UCPH), and the Danish Diabetes Academy (DDA).

At the Autumn School, we are aiming at training promising PhD candidates via a highly integrative, interdisciplinary approach. Approximately 55 young researchers will convene to discuss and network with fellow students as well as high-ranking, established senior scientists in different fields of microbiome research in relation to metabolic and inflammatory diseases. WHO CAN ATTEND?

The Autumn School addresses PhD students across scientific domains involved in research on the microbiome or in a related field of relevance to the area.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

The purpose of the Autumn School is to gather experienced and young researchers in the different fields of microbiome research in relation to metabolic and inflammatory diseases in order to initiate and establish networks and collaboration across borders.

At the Autumn School lectures will be given by international experts, approaching the fields of microbiome research from different angles. The Autumn School will have the format and spirit of a conference and all participants will have a great opportunity to actively participate in discussions with the speakers and fellow course participants. In addition, four workshops will be run in parallel, giving the participants the opportunity to work interactively in smaller groups and get hands-on experience.

During the 3-day scientific programme, all PhD students will be giving 1-minute flash talks on their current research project, followed by in-depth discussions during poster sessions.

After completing the Autumn School the attendants will have:

  • Increased the ability to network and interact in an interdisciplinary scientific community
  • Attained visibility in an international scientific context and established international contacts
  • Have been trained in, and asked to reflect essential aspects and facets of microbiome research including:
    • The basic skills, approaches and challenges in microbiome research.
    • The role of the microbiome in metabolic and inflammatory diseases.
    • The importance of recognizing and taking into account the role of diet, medication and interaction with host genetics.
    • Considering the potential diagnostic and therapeutic applications.
