Copenhagen Bioscience lecture on the future of diabetes

On August 31, 2017, the Copenhagen Bioscience Lecture, featuring Allan Flyvbjerg, CEO of Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen, and Philippe Halban, former president of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) and its research Foundation (EFSD) of which he is currently Honorary Chairman, will give you insights into opportunities and challenges in diabetes research from a scientific, clinical and health political view.

EMERITUS PROFESSOR PHILIPPE HALBAN
Philippe Halban received a PhD from the University of Oxford. After postdoctoral training in diabetes research in Geneva, Dr. Halban was Senior Investigator at the Joslin Diabetes Center, Boston, USA, before returning to the University of Geneva as Professor of Genetic Medicine and Development, where he is now Emeritus Professor. Dr. Halban’s research has been devoted to the study of beta cells. He has received several major international scientific awards including the EASD Minkowski Prize and the IDF Basic Research Prize. He is also former president of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) and its research Foundation (EFSD) of which he is currently Honorary Chairman.
At the lecture on August 31,his talk will focus on the future of diabetes research from a science policy and funding perspective, with an additional emphasis on the need for a concerted approach involving academia and industry.
PROFESSOR ALLAN FLYVBJERG
Allan Flyvbjerg graduated from Aarhus University, Denmark in 1986. He defended his thesis (DMSc) in 1993, became specialist in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology in 1999, Chief Physician in 2001, Professor in Experimental Medical Research in 2005 and Professor in Endocrinology (Chair) in 2009 at the Department of Endocrinology/Internal Medicine at Aarhus University Hospital and the Medical Research Laboratories, Department of Clinical Medicine, Aarhus University, Aarhus C., Denmark. From 2010-2016 he was Dean at the Faculty of Health at Aarhus University, Denmark. Since October 2016 he has been CEO of Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen (SDCC) at the Capital Region of Denmark, Copenhagen, Denmark and since November 2016 Clinical Professor at the University of Copenhagen.
Allan Flyvbjerg and his research team perform preclinical and clinical research focused on the pathogenesis leading to diabetic micro- and macroangiopathy. The aim of the research is to combat the increased incidence and prevalence of cardiovascular disease, blindness and end-stage renal failure in patients with diabetes.
